She Stoops to Conquer (Annotated)
Oliver Goldsmith
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-She Stoops to Conquer is an Oliver Goldsmith comedy, first presented in London in 1773. The play is a favorite to study in English literature and theater classes in the English-speaking world. It is one of the few works of the eighteenth century that has retained its appeal and is performed regularly. The work has been adapted to a film several times, even in 1914 and 1923. Initially, the work was titled One Night Errors and the events within the work take place on a long night. In 1778, John O'Keeffe wrote a loose sequel, Tony Lumpkin in Town. Act I begins at the Hardcastles house in the field. Ms. Hardcastle complains to her husband that they never leave their rural home to see new things happening in the city. Hardcastle says he loves everything old, including his old wife. Mrs. Hardcastle says she was a young woman when she had the son of her first husband, Tony, and is not yet twenty-one years old. Hardcastle complains about Tony's immaturity and love for jokes. Tony is on his way to a pub, and his mother follows him off the stage, begging him to stay and spend time with them. Kate, Hardcastle's daughter, enters. He comments on his fashion clothes, which he doesn't like. Kate reminds him of her treatment:
