Implementing the Automated Library System First edition
John Corbin
The purpose of this book is to provide a practical handbook and guide for integrating automation into existing library functions. As a companion volume to the author's "Managing the Library Automation Project," this book addresses the problems that will be encountered during the transition from manual to automated routines which occur after the hardware and software for a system have been acquired, installed, and tested. The emphasis is on the steps of the automation integration project, the impact of automation on existing functions, the changes that should and will take place, and the proper management of these changes. The text of the book is organized into 11 chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of automated library functions and the second chapter, an overview of the automation integration project. The remaining chapters describe the steps of the project, including organizational and management structure, tasks and procedures, job design and staffing, space planning and design, workstations, documentation, database conversion, computer operations, and automated function activation and evaluation.
