On September 14, 1862, the were 14,000 Federal soldiers at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, under the command of Colonel Dixon S. Miles. They were surrounded by 23,000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Major-General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson force, in what would be known as the Siege at Harpers Ferry. Sharing in the Federal garrison's fate were 1,600 cavalrymen, who refused to surrender, but instead were willing to make an escape attempt. Follow their story, and the events leading up to, their daring "Escape Across the Potomac." The information for "Escape Across the Potomac" was taken from diaries of military and civilian participants, personal letters, and newspaper articles. Included are reports from the "Official Records of the Rebellion," period newspaper articles and photographs. CW Whitehair has portrayed both a military and civilian Civil War re-enactor. he is a former volunteer Historical Interpreter and Living Historian for the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and member of the Florida Writers Association. Whitehair has written ten books, fiction and non-fiction, fifty articles, and a bestselling short story on the Civil War. He has appeared in several historical documentaries and several movies on the Civil War. CW is also a guest speaker at Civil War Roundtables, historical societies, schools, re-enactments, libraries, and book festivals. Whitehair lives in Central Florida with his wife, Rhonda, and their poodle, Mosby.
