Il eut une longue vie errante. Il frequenta l'universite, accompagna a Rome le cardinal Acquaviva, legat du pape. Puis il devint soldat. Il participa a la bataille de Lepante (1571) au cours de laquelle la flotte de la Sainte-Ligue (Espagne, Venise, Saint-Siege) battit les Turcs, mettant fin a la legende de l'invincibilite ottomane. Il y perdit un bras. Il fut fait prisonnier et passa cinq ans au bagne d'Alger. De retour en Espagne, il se maria et trouva un emploi de fonctionnaire. Il se lanca ensuite dans differents trafics qui le conduisirent en prison. Il commenca sa carriere litteraire en 1585 avec un roman pastoral dans le gout du temps. S'il n'a pas ete totalement reconnu en son temps, il est, des auteurs de l'epoque, celui qui eut le plus d'influence sur la litterature. Poete, dramaturge et romancier, il a reinvente la nouvelle, cree le roman moderne et donne naissance au heros problematique. Son 'Don Quichotte de la Mancha' a ouvert les voies de l'absurde et reste un modele de litterature burlesque.
