Diversity in Performance of Indigenous Chicken In-situ: a Study on Management and Production Capacity of the Native Chicken in Bangladesh
Md. Shahjahan
Bangladesh is a country furnished with various indigenous livestock genetic resources where native chicken (about 140 millions) are more popular in the present era of commercial chicken production. The quest of this research work was to find out the various reasons which affect the diversity in performance of indigenous chicken in-situ, conducted in some selected rural areas of Bangladesh. As a result, benchmark data on the indigenous chicken were collected from a total of 330 households and again on 105 productive native hens using a pre-tested survey questionnaire. Based on all the results, it was observed that native chicken with specific plumage color and age may increase the production where chicken type and location also accelerate the motion of their performance. Moreover, simple phenotypic screening of indigenous chicken in each village with little feed supplementation, vaccination and pursuing proper marketing facilities may increase their production capacity under the extensive system (in-situ). In addition, this book would inspire the people of different countries to conserve their respective native chicken from the clutch of extinct.
