The Story of Doctor Dolittle American Classics edition
Hugh Lofting
John Dolittle leads a mundane life as a respected, but unfulfilled, physician in 19th century England. A bachelor who resides with his sister, Dolittle seeks to liven up the home by inviting various exotic animals to live with them. Even though this scares off his sister, as well as nearly all other human interaction, and leads to his near financial ruin, Dolittle plunges ahead into his new venture, learning to communicate with the animals in their own languages and finding cures for their specific illnesses. Dolittle soon finds himself a celebrity in the animal kingdom and feels compelled to invest fully in the cause of being their savior. His life is turned upside down when he embarks on a voyage to Africa seeking to cure a monkey epidemic. This journey results in shipwreck, kidnapping, and even encounters with pirates. Only time will tell if Dolittle has sailed too far off course, or if he can find a way to return home and somehow restore his financial health. This version of the book is wonderfully formatted.
