In the 21st century, genetic engineering makes possible the creation of biologically superior human specimens ("valids"), who then grow to positions of power and prestige. Would-be astronaut Vincent(Ethan Hawke) born the old-fashioned way, can only hope for a janitorial position at the elite Gattaca Corporation--until he buys the blood, urine, and identity of a perfect but paralyzed athlete. Vincent fødes naturligt ind i en verden, hvor normen er blevet, at forældre vælger deres børns genetiske egenskaber på forhånd. Han er derfor dømt til at være andenrangsborger. Men det nægter han simpelthen at acceptere. Da han møder den genetisk perfekte Jerome, køber han derfor hans identitet. Vincents drøm er at blive astronaut og udforske rummet, men indtil nu har han ingen chancer haft for at blive ansat i GATTACA, der er verdens mest avancerede rumforskningsprojekt. Problemet er bare, at nu hvor han selv har skabt sig muligheden, kommer det efter al sandsynlighed til at koste ham livet...
