In the unique tradition of Pat Benetar, trained opera singer Lisa Larpenteur makes her pop / alternative rock debut as lead vocalist for Abacus. The band was formed in 1997 and is based in Portland, Oregon. This initial EP release is being played widely throughout the Pacific NW and northern California and will be followed this Fall by a full 14-song CD. Lisa has a powerful, yet smooth and emotionally delicate voice and includes among her influences Annie Lennox and Debbie Harry (who also had large sparkling white teeth). She is joined by John Rachel (synthesizers, guitar) as primary songwriters for Abacus. John spent several years in the Los Angeles music scene as a producer, writer and engineer. He carts this wealth of experience to Abacus rehearsals and recording sessions, more recently along with a stunning new haircut. Ron Ruiz (lead guitar) also adds his songwriting and vocal talents, bringing a wide range of playing styles and imaginative leads to the mix. He also sports some mighty long arms and big feet, not to mention an obsession with hippopatomi. Travis Rood handles the chores on bass and adds his teeth-grinding vocal sound on backups. He is an excellent player with a large, evolved brain who also suggests some hint of the extraterrestial. Doug Adair on drums is a rhythm master and superior vocalist, hitting notes which make us seriously question the hormone content of his bloodstream. He owns an impressive set of power tools and is usually covered head to toe with cat hair. Abacus is music with intelligence and intelligence that's fun. Many fans get so enthused by this music that they actually snap their fingers along with the songs. Now that's excitement!!
